What working hours agreements can you enter into as a union representative, and what should you be aware of?

As a union representative, you have the opportunity to enter into agreements on working hours that go beyond the normal scheme of the law. Here you will get an overview of the framework and concrete advice.

What role do you play as a union representative when it comes to working hours?

As a union representative, you have an important role when it comes to negotiating and entering into agreements on working hours at your workplace. The Working Environment Act gives you as a union representative the right to enter into agreements that go beyond the normal scheme of the Act. With this right also comes considerable responsibility.

Average calculation of working hours, extended overtime and reduced time off work are areas where you as a union representative can enter into agreements on behalf of the members. Such agreements can provide increased flexibility for both employers and employees, but can also entail burdens that it is important to be aware of.

On this page, you will find specific information about the framework that applies to the different types of agreements, what you should pay special attention to, and how you can ensure that your members' interests are safeguarded.

Remember that NITO's secretariat can always assist you with advice and guidance in connection with negotiations on working time arrangements. In the case of particularly extensive agreements or schemes that go beyond the framework described here, NITO must centrally approve the work plans.
